The month of August got off and running hot, and stayed that way, with no
relief but the Team did not skip a beat.
After 3 weeks of training, time trials were run on August the 20th
and the varsity, junior varsity and practice squads were formed, in preparation
for the first meet on the 27th. The traditional pasta dinner was held on the 26th
at University Methodist Church.
Seventy-five runners and family members got their choice of spaghetti,
fettuccini or ravioli. Everyone
had a good time and no one left hungry.
The first
meet at Gustafson Stadium was fun to watch because a number of runners showed
improvement from last year, despite the oppressive heat. In the varsity boys squad, Austin Wells
went toe-to-toe with Ryan McCann of O’Connor but this year, out-kicked McCann
to the finish line as overall winner, despite having to deal with the pain of
broken toenails. Shantel Swift finished
4th overall in the girls varsity squad and Jerzan Hanson was a
pleasant surprise as the top Clark boys JV finisher, having improved
tremendously from last season.
